How to present new words effectively to learners in all ages
Presenting new words can be challenging in our classes, sometimes. Some students may get bored easily or you may feel that you can't get their attention for new vocabulary teaching.
Here are some ideas to help you while presenting new words effectively to learners in all ages:
- Create a vocabulary box for each topic.
- Pick up flashcards in big size one by one to make sure that everyone in your class can see or you can prepare a presentation to teach new words for online classes or if you have a smart board and a projection in your class.
- Vocabulary books and pop-up books are especially very enjoyable as students can see pictures in big size, clearly. If you don’t have any books like these, you can stick pictures on cartoons and bring them together as a book. Then, you can pull each picture to stick it on board.
- You can create a vocabulary file, too. Pick each picture, then stick it on board. Repeat each new word one by one as a whole class. Stick them on the board.
- Focus on teaching semantic, pronunciation, written aspects of vocabulary.
- For practicing written aspect, you can prepare jumbled words, missing letters activities or games.
- For practicing semantic and pronunciation aspects at the same time:
- What is it in the box? - pick up each picture from a box or put them in colourful envelopes and ask them what it is by showing the pictures.
- Have you got a dog? - give students puppets, toys, pictures. If a students has got a picture of a cat, ask him/her ‘’Have you got a dog?’’ or ‘’What have you got?’’ to check out semantic and pronunciation aspects at the same time.
Please, make sure that you help your learners practice vocabulary with enjoyable activities and games to make sure that your students learn effectively.
Extra suggestion: After the lesson, you can create a word wall to help your students repeat new words.
